Byes and seeding

A 7-team bracket fills a 8-slot draw, so 1 team gets a first-round bye. Byes always go to the top seeds — here seed 1 — so a strong season or ranking is rewarded, never punished. Only 3 first-round matches are played.

  • Seed 1: bye to round 2

How long it takes

Rounds must finish in order, so extra courts help most early on. Playing time with no breaks:

FAQ

How many games are in a 7-team single elimination bracket?

6. Every game knocks out exactly one team, and all but the champion must be knocked out. Add one if you play a third-place game.

How many rounds are there with 7 teams?

3. The draw is rounded up to 8 slots; each round halves the field until one team is left.

How many byes does a 7-team bracket need?

1. The bracket size is the next power of two (8), and 8 − 7 = 1 slots are byes, given to the top 1 seed.

How many games does the champion play?

2 if they’re the top seed (thanks to the bye), 3 otherwise.
