Byes and seeding
A 20-team bracket fills a 32-slot draw, so 12 teams get a first-round bye. Byes always go to the top seeds — here seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4, seed 5, seed 6, seed 7, seed 8, seed 9, seed 10, seed 11, seed 12 — so a strong season or ranking is rewarded, never punished. Only 4 first-round matches are played.
- Seed 1: bye to round 2
- Seed 2: bye to round 2
- Seed 3: bye to round 2
- Seed 4: bye to round 2
- Seed 5: bye to round 2

How long it takes
Rounds must finish in order, so extra courts help most early on. Playing time with no breaks:
| 20-min games | 30-min games | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 6 h 20 min | 9 h 30 min |
| 2 courts | 3 h 20 min | 5 h |
| 4 courts | 2 h | 3 h |

How many byes does a 20-team bracket need?
12. The bracket size is the next power of two (32), and 32 − 20 = 12 slots are byes, given to the top 12 seeds.
How many games does the champion play?
4 if they’re the top seed (thanks to the bye), 5 otherwise.
