Byes and seeding

A 10-team bracket fills a 16-slot draw, so 6 teams get a first-round bye. Byes always go to the top seeds — here seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4, seed 5, seed 6 — so a strong season or ranking is rewarded, never punished. Only 2 first-round matches are played.

  • Seed 1: bye to round 2
  • Seed 2: bye to round 2
  • Seed 3: bye to round 2
  • Seed 4: bye to round 2
  • Seed 5: bye to round 2
  • Seed 6: bye to round 2

How long it takes

Rounds must finish in order, so extra courts help most early on. Playing time with no breaks:

FAQ

How many games are in a 10-team single elimination bracket?

9. Every game knocks out exactly one team, and all but the champion must be knocked out. Add one if you play a third-place game.

How many rounds are there with 10 teams?

4. The draw is rounded up to 16 slots; each round halves the field until one team is left.

How many byes does a 10-team bracket need?

6. The bracket size is the next power of two (16), and 16 − 10 = 6 slots are byes, given to the top 6 seeds.

How many games does the champion play?

3 if they’re the top seed (thanks to the bye), 4 otherwise.
