Byes and seeding
A 12-team bracket fills a 16-slot draw, so 4 teams get a first-round bye. Byes always go to the top seeds — here seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4 — so a strong season or ranking is rewarded, never punished. Only 4 first-round matches are played.
- Seed 1: bye to round 2
- Seed 2: bye to round 2
- Seed 3: bye to round 2
- Seed 4: bye to round 2
How long it takes
Rounds must finish in order, so extra courts help most early on. Playing time with no breaks:
| 20-min games | 30-min games | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 court | 3 h 40 min | 5 h 30 min |
| 2 courts | 2 h | 3 h |
| 4 courts | 1 h 20 min | 2 h |
FAQ

How many byes does a 12-team bracket need?
4. The bracket size is the next power of two (16), and 16 − 12 = 4 slots are byes, given to the top 4 seeds.
How many games does the champion play?
3 if they’re the top seed (thanks to the bye), 4 otherwise.
