Byes and seeding

A 24-team bracket fills a 32-slot draw, so 8 teams get a first-round bye. Byes always go to the top seeds — here seed 1, seed 2, seed 3, seed 4, seed 5, seed 6, seed 7, seed 8 — so a strong season or ranking is rewarded, never punished. Only 8 first-round matches are played.

  • Seed 1: bye to round 2
  • Seed 2: bye to round 2
  • Seed 3: bye to round 2
  • Seed 4: bye to round 2
  • Seed 5: bye to round 2
  • Seed 6: bye to round 2
  • Seed 7: bye to round 2
  • Seed 8: bye to round 2

How long it takes

Rounds must finish in order, so extra courts help most early on. Playing time with no breaks:

FAQ

How many games are in a 24-team single elimination bracket?

23. Every game knocks out exactly one team, and all but the champion must be knocked out. Add one if you play a third-place game.

How many rounds are there with 24 teams?

5. The draw is rounded up to 32 slots; each round halves the field until one team is left.

How many byes does a 24-team bracket need?

8. The bracket size is the next power of two (32), and 32 − 24 = 8 slots are byes, given to the top 8 seeds.

How many games does the champion play?

4 if they’re the top seed (thanks to the bye), 5 otherwise.
