Round robin byes, explained
On this page
A bye is a round where a team doesn’t play. Round robins need them whenever the number of teams is odd, because one team is always left without an opponent.
How many rounds with an odd number?
With n teams: if n is even you need n − 1 rounds; if n is odd you need n rounds, and one team sits out each round. Seven teams play 7 rounds of 3 matches — 21 matches total.
What makes a bye schedule fair
- Everyone sits out the same number of times — exactly once per cycle.
- Nobody sits out twice in a row.
- Byes don’t cluster at the start or end for the same teams.
The generator uses the circle method with a rotating “rest” slot, which guarantees all three. In a double round robin, each team rests exactly twice.
Do byes give points?
In a round robin, no — everyone gets the same number of byes, so points would cancel out. In Swiss, a bye scores as a win, because only some players receive one.
Byes in brackets
Knockout brackets need a power of two (8, 16, 32…). If you have 13 entrants, three first-round byes fill the 16-slot bracket — and they go to the top three seeds.
When a team drops out mid-event
Withdraw them instead of rebuilding the schedule. You choose whether their played results count; their remaining opponents simply get a forfeit win, so nobody else’s schedule changes.
